Mantario sits in the Rural Municipality of Chesterfield No. 261, about 70 kilometres southwest of Kindersley on Highway 44. It is a special service area today, but it held village status until June 30, 2007.
The name is a blend of two provincial names, Manitoba and Ontario. It was chosen in imitation of nearby Alsask, another community named after provinces, in that case Alberta and Saskatchewan.
